ART & WRITING BY THE UNFREE
SUBSCRIBE & DONATE
Not Shut Up is a national quarterly magazine celebrating and facilitating creative programming in a range of custodial settings – prisons, secure hospitals, refugee centres, children’s homes and the like, all across the UK. Read our latest issue online now.
As a registered charity, we distribute our magazine free of charge to over 300 establishments and care teams around the country, promoting the benefits of creative thinking, reading and writing. By publishing magazines and books, organising workshops and live readings, as well as offering career development opportunities, we bring creative development into secure establishments and share the work of unfree artists with the wider world.
Celebrating our tenth anniversary year, we publish stories, essays and artwork from all across the UK and increasingly abroad. We champion the work done by artists and charities working in our sector, ensuring those who have been denied their freedom can access engagement, education and employability programmes run by the likes of English PEN, Koestler Trust and Fine Cell Work.

As you may have noticed, Not Shut Up is currently dormant. We’ve fallen foul of some of the funding challenges currently facing small charities in the UK — but we hope to be back up and running again before too long.
Keep checking back for further updates. In the meantime, please feel free to browse our website, read our previous issues and contact a member of our team to find out more.
